Yane no Shita no Artemis, or loosely translated as "Under the Same Roof as Artemis" is thoroughly enjoyable romantic comedy that explores the rather challenging, and often uncomfortable feelings of squandered youth, wasted potential, the importance of stories & human connection, emergent adulthood and more. It handles these themes shockingly competently, it's cast of characters being well rounded with this dense, real feel to each of them- drawing you in rather completely into the earnest nature of their interactions, behavior, and beliefs. However, I'm getting ahead of myself somewhat.
The premise is rather simple, out protagonist- Sanosuke is... well sort of a deadbeat. I'm being a ... little harsh here, but he's particularly incompetent with managing his money, squandering it on rare editions of novels instead of paying his rent, which acts sort of as a parallel to his youth. While Sanosuke most certainly had friends and acquaintances in high-school and throughout his life, he's always been far more consumed with the realm of novels and fiction, being a dedicated and overly impassioned reader of all varieties of novel (which in a way, is ALSO mirrored by another minor character we see later). This is indicative of his almost chuuni-esque disillusion with reality that's endemic to the experience of youth- however it's not just that simple! Sanosuke, despite being rather dense when it comes to his personal experience and forays with romance, is an often emotionally mature and an empathetic individual. He's personable, funny, caring, friendly (and willing to befriend just about anyone!), willing to undertake any form of job in order to avoid his plight of homelessness, and comes packed with all the necessary house-husband skills required to maintain the high maintenance (partially autistic coded) Koharu Kobachi. While he is in many ways an immature college student, due to his prolific love for an eclectic variety of literature, he is very much so in touch with the feelings and emotions of others & himself (even if he's still somewhat immature). It's rather understandable why others love and care so deeply for him, he's like a candle or heater of sorts- warm to be around, always missed when gone and welcome to be near. He lights up others and brings out the strengths of others even when he doesn't realize he's doing it.
Kobachi is our eponymous Artemis- stemming from the Greek mythological figure of the same name, one who is famed for her chastity in all instances except for the myth of Orion, the sole individual who was capable of enthralling the dedicated and focused heart of the huntress. The myth has some loose connections to this work, Kobachi is characterized by her near profound science-oriented intelligence, but her childlike and immature socio-personal and emotional intelligence. That's not even to say she' unkind or callous, she's comedic (if not unintentionally), clumsy, silly, and complex. Her intense love of research and science ultimately blinding her to the world around her- including one of the most imperative elements of life, human connection. Her brilliance, acting as this double edged sword, creating a gulf between her and others- nobody feels capable of crossing due to their preconceptions about her, that she's some sort of untouchable entity that exists beyond human comprehension- while failing to realize just hos isolating, and painful that kind of treatment is to someone, especially in their formative years.
This is where I feel the story shines most exeptionally, aside from the romance/general interactions (which is also just phenomenal).
Uraya-san belabors themselves with the point that human interaction is a cornerstone of life- research or knowledge don't exist in a purely isolated vacuum. There's a classic phrase, in which we stand atop the shoulders of giants- and this very notion echoes throughout Uraya's work as it's core philosophy. Not simply just in how knowledge is built upon, and inherited from those of the past, but also in how relationships- how we transfer ideas, beliefs, memes, and emotions are translated through language, interaction, and the stories we share with one another. In part, that's why I believe this work to be so resonant with me. Uraya recognizes the impossible, overwhelming, all consuming importance that human connection has in the sharing of knowledge. I'm most certainly not the one to put it into words, or perfectly capture this idea- but it's one of the most present and intense themes that Uraya explores throughout this work. It gets to a point it's almost beating you over the head with this idea, not because the work doesn't believe the reader to be intelligent enough to understand it- but rather that Uraya-san believes it so intensely, so passionately that it bleeds through in every single word. That moment with the sunset at the river touches on this notion, but also on the universality of emotions that we experience. With such vividity and beauty is this displayed than at that scene, it's honestly a part of what inspired me to write this review!
There's also another incredible positive about this narrative, and it's that the characterization of these memorable, empathetic, enjoyable characters is that Uraya-sans art is wonderful! It's thick and glossy, very much so feeling like it draws loose inspiration from other slice of life mangakas (Azuma Kiyohiko & Chiba Yuu immediately come to mind) artistically. The characters are defined and outlined by these thick lines, with almost boxy- but very human figures and shapes. Their clothing always feels dense, and real- like there's an actual weight to their movements, stances and posture. Further exemplifying that are their styles, each character being distinct from one another, but also being particularly... real. None of their outfits are absurd, or overly complex- they just dress like people. I feel like their designs echo further this feeling I've had throughout this entire work, that these characters come off more as real people than in much of what I've ever read. Don't get me wrong- there's some genuine absurdity that sometimes works, and othertimes feels, well, off? Don't misunderstand me, fanservice of beautiful characters in lewd depictions is something i lap up like a dog dying of thirst- but there's one instance in which it feels slightly out of place (being in the most recent chapters). It's not experience ruining, just a strange taste so to speak.
This work is obviously not flawless- I have my qualms. There's this sort of strange harem, love triangle angle that exists at the center of this work- and it's walking a very tenuous line of veering into trashy writing. I love trash, but this isn't it. This work has some incredible potential to continuously explore the challenges, and conflicting emotions of desire, love (unrequited, and as it grows and blossoms), and the pain that that is guaranteed from this experience. This is portrayed rather explicitly with, arguably my favorite character in this work (which has a rather limited cast- but all of whom are used exceptionally well!), Shinonome Yukina. She's just so wonderful, she's the near perfect encapsulation of the Tsundere archetype, not so cruel or mean to be hostile and icey- yet not so soft and emotional to be a deredere. She strikes the perfect medium within the archetype while also being so spine-shatteringly adorable, and honest, and genuine with how she (and every other character) responds.
These three make up the core character list, and each of them are so lovable, and unique- despite being defined (overarching) by their archetypes, they are rather fresh. They stand out- for their designs, behavior, and Uraya's fantastic characterization, directing, and penmanship. This work is so absolutely worth your time, and while it's still fairly early in it's writing I can tell there is so much heartbreak, pain, joy, and love to come with this series. I can't quite give it a gold seal of approval- as if that would mean anything from some random!- due to it being actively published, but I can not emphasize enough just how much of a gem Under the Same Roof as Artemis is.

Usually, I dislike harems and love triangles, but these characters are so compelling, flawed, and honest that I have just binged this whole thing, and I love it. I love the art, and I can see the humanity in both the girls. While the MC is a bit of a comedic placeholder for the girls to interact with, he is still human and interesting.

The set-up is unique in my experience and represents my own life as a purely scientific child who hated humanities subjects. While I have now grown to respect the arts, this story is talking to me on a personal level, and my ... empathy for Koharu Kobachi is off the scale. However, my maturity recognises that Shinonome is a better fit for him, but I am still rooting for the science nerd to win.

After a couple of months and 16 new chapters, I figured it was time for an updated review.

Art — 9/10
Sensei Nagi’s art was what pulled me in from the start, and it still hasn’t lost its charm. The character designs are clean, expressive, and consistently appealing. It’s the kind of art that makes even quiet moments feel engaging, and honestly, it’s become one of my favorite styles in romance manga.

Story — 10/10
The story remains one of the strongest aspects of this series. It’s unique, charming, and surprisingly engaging at every turn. Character development feels natural and well-paced, and there’s rarely a moment where ... things drag. Every chapter leaves me wanting the next one immediately, which says a lot. As of this update, there are only 30 chapters out, and I already wish there were more.

Characters — 10/10
I’ve already gone into detail about the cast in earlier thoughts, and that opinion hasn’t really changed—if anything, it’s improved. Shinonome’s development has been especially interesting to watch. From my perspective, she’s grown more aware of the flaws in her affection for Sakari and seems to have a clearer understanding of what she actually wants, pursuing it more sincerely and without the selfish hesitation she had before.
The introduction of Miaki adds a fun new dynamic to the cast. She’s immediately likable, brings good humor, and clearly has the potential to stir up the already complicated love situation. While it’s obvious she’s stepping into love polygon territory, her presence doesn’t feel forced, and she’s a welcome addition. (Though let’s be real—Kobachi still clears.)

Pacing — 8/10
The pacing is solid overall. The story flows naturally, scenes transition smoothly, and it’s easy to stay immersed without feeling rushed or bored. Nothing really stands out as an issue here.

Overall — 9.25/10
This score honestly feels earned. The series shows a lot of potential, and unlike many romance manga, it manages to maintain its charm as it progresses. While I’m usually not a fan of polygon-style romances, Yane no Shita no Artemis stands out as one of the few that really works for me—and probably the best among the ones I’ve tried.
Highly recommended.
