Extraordinarily ordinary isekai which got cancelled after 10 chapters.

I will struggle to write enough to meet MyAnimeList's reauired quota of characters to post this review, because there is so little to this manga.

It is about a young woman wasted her entire childhood raising her siblings. The moment her adult life starts she dies in an accident. She reincarnates in a different world with the desire to live for herself. She is given incredible magical powers, yet spends amost all 10 chapters living mostly like she did before dying. Taking care of stuff at home.

[The Legend of Dong bai] is an Isekai story with a somewhat interesting premise.

Unfortunately. Not a chapter in and it squanders it all to be softcore child pornography.
Fortunately, this manga has been cancelled.

It begins with a convoluted premise about the protagonist being addicted to a gambling focused mobilegame, and meeting a fortune teller to help him win. He is then reincarnated into a world based on the famous Chinese historical fiction novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

While the settup of the story is a mess, I was actually quite interested in an isekai in this setting.
It is unfortunate that this is not it.

The premise is not unique but it is a premise that always has potential. The protagonist is reincarnated as a cute creature in a fantasy world. Sadly the author has no intention of making good use of this premise. It abandons any focus on the story for a bigger focus on the elf deuteragonist's breasts. A girl who immediately becomes attached to the protagonist.

The story is no more than a vehicle to put the elf in sexual positions so that the protagonist, side characters and the reader may oogle her.

[The eternal fool's words of wisdom: A pawsitively fantastic adventure]

The start of this manga was just decent enough to give me hope. Which it then mercilessly crushed.

‼️ Female characters are sexualized. Male warriors wear full plate armour. Female warriors wear corsets, miniskirts and thigh high socks. Civilian women sometimes wear night gowns or leotards. In freezing cold.

⚠️ It features slavery and child prostitution (though it is only described, not shown). It is handled very crudely, and the protagonist buys the slave's freedom, funding the slavers.
...
It could have been an average power fantasy adventure, but the author could not help but walk into every isekai trap possible (despite not being an isekai). In the end, it is not a power fantasy. It is a harem power fantasy.

I do not recommend this manga.


▶Story: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The protagonist Asley drank the elixir of eternal youth and has spent thousands of years studying magic. When Asley goes to explore the world, it is no longer the world he knew, and it sets up the story to explore themes like aging, coming to terms with the times changing, and how to really get the most out of your limited time spent alive. That is a recipe for a decent power fantasy with some depth, but it is all squandered.

This is just sexist low quality slop. It is not an isekai, but it has the tropes of one. The protagonist is basically new to the world, and he is overpowered compared to other humans. Much of the story is just focused on the protagonist picking up girls for his harem, like a lot of bottom of the barrel isekai.
It boldly tries to tackle the topic of child prostitution, but lacks the maturity and skill to handle it well. It serves no other purpose than to expand the character roster, give Asley motivation, and an opportunity for the protagonist to seem kindhearted, when what he actually does is supporting slave trading.
Even ignoring all of that, it is not a good story. The pacing is all over the place. The story will have Asley go on adventures for a few chapters, then abruptly stop and settle down for years at a time. With timeskips lasting years.


▶Setting: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Completely unoriginal isekai fantasy setting. Medieval Europe inspired fantasy settings with adventurer guilds and floating status panels showing your levels. No explanation is ever given as to why status panels or levels exist.

▶Characters: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The protagonist Asley lives up to the title of the manga. He is a fool and a coward. Not a very likeable character, and any unique character traits he might have started with is chipped away at by every single story arc. Turning him into a generic isekai protagonist.

The dog companion Pochi is more likeable and lively at the start, but he devolves into a joke character, with only one joke.

The main girl he teams up with is mostly just eyecandy. There seemed to be an attempt to give her some personality, but eventually as she slowly falls in love with the protagonist, she loses any distinctive trait she had.

Most other side characters are just walking tropes. They are not given that much time in the spotlight, but when they are, it is usually a detriment. A short girl who is angry. A busty tall woman who sexually harasses the protagonist. Archetypes seen too often in anime and manga.

▶Artwork: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The artwork is quite rough around the edges (literally), but it is serviceable in action scenes. It is black and white without colour, as is common in Japanese comics.

Monster designs are especially rough, with it being hard to tell what they are supposed to be at times.

The most disappointing aspect of the art is the character designs. With women being objectified, given little practical combat gear, while men get to wear proper armour,

Their breasts also get bigger and bigger. It is no question that the girls only serve as eyecandy or as potential romantic interests for the main character.

I am only this annoyed because it had potential during the prologue.
It could have been a decent power fantasy, or at least generic, but it ended up being a gooner slop

[The Soulless Duchess] is an old manhwa filled with tropes that are now a bit overdone.

The first 50 or so chapters of this manhwa is very rough. I was planning on dropping it at around chapter 30 and giving it a fairly negative review, and I still think that would have been fair of me.

It improves a lot. Every aspect of the manhwa gets better throughout the story, and in the end I was fairly satisfied with my time with it.

🟠 I somewhat recommend [The Soulless Duchess] with all ... the previously mentioned caveats. It goes from a fairly bad story to a decent one that outstays its welcome.


▶Story: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As mentioned in the summary, the opening chapters are very weak. Most of my criticisms are of the first 50 or so chapters. I enjoyed my time with the manhwa afterwards.

This is a story about a noble lady being transported back in time and using her knowledge of the future to take revenge on those who wronged her. A classic revenge isekai premise. She gets into a contract marriage with the cold duke of the north but then real feelings start to blossom. Another classic isekai premise.

The way the story introduces the premise and the characters feels awkward however. It does not take itself seriously enough, and the characters act too careless to build up any tension.

For the first 50 chapters the manhwa is more or less just a power fantasy where the protagonist Yvona can do no wrong and everything is handed to her on a silver platter. Yvona summons big monsters in the middle of the street without any consequences, when a central part of the plot is how she does not want people to find out about her summoning. If she needs to learn of a secret plot, she will just happen to walk past the masterminds in the street while they are divulging their deepest secrets to themselves, out loud, and when Yvona who has previously had no experience in the public eye has to navigate the complex social space of noble ladies, she is suddenly an expert.

It feels like the story is biting off more than it can chew, and topics like the fight for women's rights did not get the amount of attention and care it needed. This is despite the manhwa overstaying its welcome for more than 50 chapters after the natural climax of the manhwa. I enjoyed the story arc after the climax and found it really satisfying, but I was also waiting for it to end.


▶Setting: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The setting of the manhwa is The Empire of Parama.

It isn't very clear where or what kind of setting this is. As an example, they have locomotives; but appear to be fighting using sword and shield. The only thing that the setting is firm about is that there is an empire with a shallow version of European nobility. There is a demon king and a church.


▶Characters: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The protagonist Yvona is one of my main gripes with the story. The Yvona from before she traveled a year into the past was so naive and easily exploited that she does not feel even slightly like the same person as the one from after time traveling. She is headstrong, clever, and easily outsmarts anyone trying to backstab her. She stands far above her peers. While her past self had problems with her self confidence, thought nothing of herself and clung to anyone willing to spare her a glance.

The male lead appears bland at first, without many strong defining characteristics, but throughout the story he evolves into the character with the most depth and thought put into him. His story is well written and while too fantastical to be relateable, it is very easy to understand his struggle.

The villains are basic and one dimensional. Rude and self centered and the story does not do a lot to develop them. They are just obstacles for the protagonists.


▶Romance: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have read an Otome Isekai with a cold duke of the north, you have already seen most of the things this romance can offer. "I will buy everything in the store", lack of communication creating misunderstandings and doubt. It has the usual tropes.

The northern duke of the empire who is known by everyone to be cold and uncaring fall for the protagonist immediately, and the romance slowly blossoms from there. It is a quite lovely romance story though, with affection that goes both ways. I really appreciated the amount of care Yvona showed the duke, and how she becomes someone he can lean on as well.

Like every other aspect of the manhwa, it takes a while before the romance gets going, and you will have to get very far before they act like the newlywed pair that they actually are, and the characters can be a bit dense, causing the romance plot to drag a bit.


▶Artwork: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The character artwork is alright. It gets better, but it never stands out as particularly pretty. It struggles with communicating strong emotions and expressions very well.

The backgrounds are almost exclusively 3D assets, which matches the character art but does not look very good. Some objects such as horse carriages are particularly rough.


▶In conclusion: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It started out really poorly, but managed to go from fairly bad to fairly decent. It is hard to recommend it with so many other Otome Isekai out there, but it is not so bad I would outright recommend against reading it. Especially if all you want is a female led power fantasy. In that case I really recommend it.

My biggest issue with it was the inconsistencies between the protagonist before the timetravel and the protagonist afterwards. They are so different it does not feel like the same person. The male lead on the other hand feels very consistent and I was pleasantly surprised by his story.

I am also grateful that the gay couple was never villainized for being gay, even if they are bad people.
Also I have no idea why it is called [The soulless duchess]. It has nothing to do with the story.

[A Wicked Tale of Cinderella's Stepmom] is a child rearing and romance Otome Isekai. Wait, don't dismiss this manhwa yet! I know a lot of people dislike child rearing Otome isekai, but all the protagonist's children are in their late teens, almost into their twenties.

While most child rearing manhwa have the protagonist raise pre-school aged children or even infants. These teenagers are old enough to have story arcs about self discovery and their own romance subplots.

Asides from the art, I really enjoyed this story and I recommend it.

It is a very down to earth story. There are not that many fantastical elements or action filled segments, and it is mostly a story about a mother trying to do the best for her daughters.

[A Wicked Tale of Cinderella's Stepmom] follows a very kind and loving person from our world who reincarnated into the body of Mildred. Cinderella's cruel stepmother. She refuses to be like the original Mildred, and she is determined to make both her two daughters and her stepdaughter happy.

The story is slow paced but I still found it very engaging, and found myself engrossed for all 140 chapters. I was immersed enough to be genuinely excited to see the three daughters dance at their first ball.

Later on in the manhwa, the story focuses more on the very patriarchal culture and laws of their society which might all be obstacles to the happiness of her daughters.


▶Setting: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is set in a world inspired by what pop culture thinks the middle ages were like. Specifically the world of Cinderella. Which means there is a tiny bit of magic.

The most developed aspect of the setting is the traditions, and social norms of the world. With the main focus of the story being on how nobles, specifically women, should behave in high society. Noble women being expected to marry and not being allowed to work or provide for themselves is a major focus of the story.


▶Characters: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mildred is dedicated to raising her daughters. That is not uncommon for child rearing focused Otome Isekai, but with all her daughters being almost adults, she is quite different from most parents in stories like this. She is much more mature, and a very gentle mother. She is very conflict averse, and good at handling both her teenage daughters and other social situations.

The three daughters are Iris, Lily and the stepdaughter Ashley. Iris having brown eyes and Lily having green eyes if you too found it difficult to tell them apart at the start...

Iris believes she has a responsibility as the oldest daughter to help both her sisters and her mother. Being too willing to sacrifice herself for both. Her story is about self discovery and loving yourself.

Lily has a dream that is at odds with what is expected of her as a woman. Society expects her to get married, and she worries about losing her identity if she becomes someone's wife. Her story is about pursuing that dream no matter the sacrifices.

Lastly there is Ashley (Cinderella). She was a victim of abuse before the protagonist reincarnated into Mildred's body. She has a lot of traumas to process, but she is in my opinion the least interesting of the three daughters and she is so far the character with the least pages dedicated to her among the girls.

Several of them have their own romantic subplots.


The male lead is mysterious and mysteriously kind towards the protagonist. You cannot help but wonder what his motivations are, or if he did just fall in love with Mildred at first sight. He acts like a gentleman, and like the protagonist, is an adult and flirts like one too.
I am avoiding mentioning some of the characters to avoid spoiling the story.



▶Romance: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are many romantic subplots all happening at once in this manhwa.

For Mildred, that romance comes in the form of polite greetings and picnics with the whole family. Rather than kisses on a moonlit balcony. It is slow and mature (not in a sexual way). She is sadly suffering from a disease that many romance story protagonists suffer from. Being completely oblivious of affection from the male lead. It was not enough to irritate me though.

The other romantic subplots are quite different from Mildred's. Showing that the author is capable of writing romance between two teenagers as well as between two adults. I found them both enjoyable.


▶Artwork: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The artwork is sadly mostly a letdown and it betrays the story it is meant to tell.

The only thing the artist did to make the stepsisters of Cinderella "ugly" is giving them larger (than usual in manhwa) noses. When the characters are describing them as ugly, and my eyes are telling me they are not, it is quite jarring.

Asides from that, the character art is passable. There is quite a lot of variety in the character designs which I appreciate.

Almost all backgrounds are entirely constructed using 3D assets. Unfortunately the assets often stand out in contrast to the character art, and a lot of the assets used do not fit that well. (If I am to nitpick, I saw a 3D asset of a 1920s style kitchen in a scene).

Lastly, one of the central plotlines follows an aspiring artist, and the art does not serve that plotline very well when the most important painting is not hand drawn, but instead a 3D model with a blur/smear filter applied to it.


▶In conclusion: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really liked it, but it does have problems.

It is difficult to take the story seriously when Mildred describes her daughters as ugly, yet they all look indistinguishable from other women drawn in a manhwa style. The only difference being their more pronounced noses (something which in my opinion makes them look even prettier).

Fortunately the manhwa does not do that very often, and it has a lot more stories to tell. Overall it does a good enough job for me to somewhat overlook the problems with the art. I enjoyed seeing her daughters spread their wings and develop as characters, and the romance isn't badly done either.

[The Devil Raises a Lady] or its official title that I do not like as much [The Lady of the Devil] is an Otome isekai and a Revenge fantasy.

It is about the protagonist scheming and planning her way to victory. Navigating noble society to amass the power she needs for her revenge.

I wholeheartedly recommend this manhwa. It was a very satisfying read.

The first chapter starts with the day before Ayana's execution. She is visited by her closest friend.. Or someone who looks like him. This "friend" offers her a deal to turn back time, and give her a chance at revenge, at the cost of everything (soul included?)

This is a regression type isekai. A story where the protagonist is transported back in time with their memories of the future rather than a person from our Earth. Ayana travels 13 years into the past, and using her knowledge of the future, she tries to change her fate and the fate of her family.

The "friend" returned to the past with her, also aware of what happened in the future. He promises to help her with her revenge, with caveats however. It is a very tense story about trying to survive plots of murder and assassins. She is given some amount of leniency thanks to her powerful friend, but it is nonetheless a tense and exciting read.


▶Setting: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[The Devil Raises a Lady] is set in a Medieval European inspired setting, with a focus on nobility.

The protagonist is the daughter of a count at odds with other noble houses. The title of count is relatively weak, and with the world being strongly patriarchal, she has to fight not just against external threats, but those on her side who do not have much faith in her due to her being a woman.

There are also some fantastical elements to the story since it features demons. Though their nature has barely been explored as of the writing of this review.


▶Characters: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The protagonist Ayana is very well written. She has dedicated her second life to revenge, but she is unable to fully close her heart off. She shows great care and love for her family, and doubt in her heart when she is forced to make difficult choices. She is very complex and the story very quickly got me to root for her.

The devil named Diavel (not very subtle) is interesting, and I am very curious if he will be a love interest or if his interest is a different kind of love. A more unhealthy and obsessive kind.. Curious if there is more to him than just cruelty.

Russel, perhaps the male lead? is another very interesting and central character to the plot. He was a very dangerous person in the future. Ayana's executioner from chapter 1, but after traveling to the past Ayana gets to see a different side of him.

The villains are equally as complex and interesting as Russel is, and it is nice to see both Ayana and her villains develop throughout the story.


▶Romance: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As of writing, the romance scenes are quite sparse. Definitely not the main focus of the story.
The protagonist herself want the romance to take a backseat to her revenge, but this IS an Otome Isekai, so I do wonder how long she can keep that up.

Strategic arranged marriages bereft of love is a topic that is tackled several times throughout the story, and the protagonist too talks about incorporating them into her revenge.

So far the romance hasn't been very romantic, but it has been very important to the plot.


▶Artwork: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The artstyle starts out a bit rough or at the very least different than usual. Faces being more angular, with sharper eyes. I personally did not dislike this, but the art changes throughout the manhwa to become similar to its peers.

Of note though is the very heavy use of 3D assets for both characters attires and backgrounds. The clothing in the manhwa are intricate and full of detail, but ribbons, jewelry, patterns and buttons are almost always 3D assets, and not hand drawn. The backgrounds are very detailed, but are almost entirely 3D assets.

Which makes it all the more impressive how easily you forget it as you read. The artist does a good job blending the hand drawn art with the 3D assets, and emotions and dramatic scenes are well delivered. The art also continues to improve throughout the manhwa series.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this manhwa. I lament the fact that it is ongoing and I had to stop at a cliffhanger, because this is definitely an Otome Isekai you read for its engrossing plot.

I do not have many complains about the manhwa other than the artwork. I was somewhat disappointed by it. While I understand the time constraints and the amount of pressure an artist is under, fully hand drawn art will always impress me more than 3D models, it did not ruin my enjoyment however.

Before her capture and imminent execution in the previous timeline, Ayana was a military commander waging war against her enemies. After traveling back to the past, I was disappointed that she couldn't put her combat experiences to use, but that was probably a smart choice by the author. She is already clever and defy expectations. She does not have to be good at absolutely everything.

[Middle-Aged Man Overpowers with Guns in the Another Universe.]

⚠️Female characters are sexualized to an extreme degree in this manga.
⚠️ The girls are of a dubious age, and some or most seem to be implied to be underage.

For no more than half a chapter, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that the protagonist could travel back and forth between our world and the fantasy world. That is not very common in isekai.

Not even a chapter later I realised I had underestimated the depravity of this manga. This is ... a harem power fantasy about a 40 year old salaryman who travels a fantasy world and travels together with a bunch of young girls.

I refuse to finish this manga, but considering the second chapter talks about the protagonist being unmarried and finding a partner, I assume this story will end up with him marrying one of the many very very young girls who follows him around.
🔴I do not recommend this manga.


▶Story: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought the story would have an ounce of originality, but it is all just an excuse for the 40 year old protagonist to go around picking up girls.

The very first chapter, and the very first character the manga introduces the reader to is a female "knight" wearing an outfit with a boob window and thigh high socks. She immediately falls for the protagonist. By the fourth chapter, a second girl has appeared, a dark elf with gigantic breasts wearing a bikini. She too falls for the protagonist.

In the third act, a third girl appears, implied to be a child. The first shot we see of her is of her underwear. She too seems to fall for the protagonist, and the culmination of her arc is a panel of her undressing.

When the opportunity to drink alcohol presents itself in the manga, only the 40 year old protagonist drinks beer, the others are given soda pop. Unlike the protagonist whose age is stated to be 40, the ages of the girls are not stated. I do not know if only one of them is underage, or all of them. It is hard to tell with the manga artstyle, but they all look very young.

Asides from the creepy harem plot, it is also a bad powerfantasy isekai focused on firearms. The protagonist has the power to summon any firearm he wants and he uses this power to steamroll almost any challenge he and not very realistically. I have never seen a gun isekai portray guns this poorly before. They work more like magical guns in videogames, than real life guns.

The author also does not shy away from using rape and threats of rape in his story. Making the very first villain a slaver who the protagonist defeats to show how nice he is.


▶Setting: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No thought has gone into how the setting functions. The world seems to be a generic Medieval Europe inspired fantasy setting, but below the surface there is nothing.

A noble is defeated by our 'wonderful' protagonist, and he is supposedly arrested by the authorities, despite nobles being the authorities in this world? As I said. There was not much though put into how this world works.


▶Characters: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The protagonist does not have a very well defined personality other than the usual. Being kind and nice to people he meets and having a good work ethic.

The girls have little depth to them either. Despite being given backstories and supposed motivations, they are just there along for the ride.

The villains so far are again, not very complex. With the first villain being a rapist who only talks about how he wants to own every women, and the next two villains being mindless beasts/creatures.


▶Artwork: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The comic is in black and white, which is common for Japanese comics. The artwork varies between fairly detailed with good use of perspective, to very basic and simple backgrounds, action scenes are sometimes a bit hard to follow, but the most glarring issue is how almost every woman important to the story is drawn in chainmail bikini or worse, and the manga has no qualms about putting the dark elf companion wearing only a bikini front and centre.

I came in expecting a low stakes low quality isekai where I could just turn my brain off and relax while reading. I did not expect it to be a harem manga where the protagonist is a 40 year old salary man going on an adventure with a bunch of girls who appear to be teenagers.

Sometimes I continue reading to make sure I can document all the issues plaguing a manga, but I have seen enough.

[Wake up, Warrior] is a reverse harem story with a sheep-human hybrid girl as its protagonist.
The protagonist's design is adorable, so I probably placed my expectations for this manhwa a bit too high.

⚠️ This story contains depiction of child abuse. It is presented as negative and revenge is a big focus of the story.

It is an unfocused story that is at best middling at everything it attempts to do. Be it art, story or romance.
The story has finished at 150 chapters and I read it so you ... do not have to. I do not recommend this manhwa.

The story follows a sheep-human hybrid girl named Kakana and 5 superhuman companions (the romantic interests, duh) who one day show up on her doorstep asking for help.
The story is all over the place and it never really finds it's pace. The early chapters are whimsical and it does not feel like the author is sure about what tone they want their manhwa to have. The main topic of the story is Kakana overcoming her traumatic past with the help and support of her companions, and much of the manhwa struggles with setting the right tone for that topic.
Suddenly in the middle of the story the protagonist has a school arc, where she attends a boarding school. As unexpected as this was, it is also in my opinion the most compelling arc of the manhwa.
I was hoping the story would improve in the latter half, but unfortunately it completes at 150 chapters without having done so. The final 10 chapters are quite satisfying, but not worth the time it takes to get there.


▶Setting: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is set in some vaguely Medieval European inspired fantasy setting, with a focus on the dangers, discrimination and enslavement of hybrids (half human, half animal). Though outside of events personally related to the protagonist, you do not really get to see any of this.
It is otherwise not a very inspired setting and the art does not help it.


▶Characters: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The protagonist has a strong personality shaped by her past traumas and her own way of coping with them. She is physically weak, but very resourceful, and does not just sit back and let the 5 romantic interests handle all the problems. There were times where I wished she was in a better story.
As a harem, it struggles from something I assume most harem stories struggle from. Too many characters.
There are 5 men smitten with Kakana, and they are all distinct stereotypes, and quite one dimensional. None of them given the pages needed to really learn about any of them. The same goes for the villains. Nameless entities whose backstories are only thrown in at the very end when their role in the story are over.
There are many characters and even with 150 chapters, it is not enough for all of them.


▶Romance: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The romance starts with potential, and ends somewhat satisfyingly, but there are 130 chapters between the start and the end that you have to get through that is not worth it. In addition, anything beyond kissing is not shown, and it fades to black whenever something more spicy happens.
The story also uses the protagonist's "heat cycle" as a plot point. Something hybrids experience in this universe. I was not a big fan of that.

The artwork ranges from really bad to barely passable. The first act has some charming or funny pages, but that does not last
The background art is almost exclusively 3D models, and it rarely looks good.
The action scenes are also really hard to follow at times.

[Wake up, Warrior] suffers from a lot of maladies. From poor art, to pacing. The protagonist Kakana is what made me check the manhwa out in the first place, and it was unfortunately the only thing that somewhat met expectations.
Before the midpoint, I had already lost all motivation to continue and I can not recommend anyone else push through like I did.
Lastly, I noticed a very weird plot hole. The protagonist says she will eat pork for dinner in chapter 1, yet over 70 chapters later they make a big deal about her trying meat for the first time
