Mamonogurai no Boukensha: Ore dake Mamono wo Kuratte Tsuyoku Naru

Monster Eater is probably one of the more underrated fantasy shows I’ve watched recently. I do not mean that in the “this is secretly a flawless masterpiece” sense, because it absolutely has limitations. The animation is simple, the presentation is closer to an animated manga than a high-budget TV anime, and there are parts of the power system that could have been explained more cleanly. But as an actual viewing experience, I enjoyed this far more than its score would suggest.

The main reason is simple: this is one of the rare “eat monsters / gain powers” stories that does not immediately turn into a generic ... overpowered power fantasy.

That trope is not completely new. Re:Monster, Berserk of Gluttony, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, Reincarnated as a Sword, and similar series all play around with some version of absorbing, stealing, copying, or collecting powers. I enjoy those shows too, but they often run into the same issue: once the main character gains enough abilities, the story has to shift away from survival and toward side characters, nation-building, armies, subordinates, or larger systems because the protagonist themselves becomes too strong to be interesting in a normal adventure structure.

Monster Eater is refreshing because it slows that process down.

The main character gets stronger, obviously, but it rarely feels like he is simply stacking permanent buffs until the story breaks. His abilities feel more situational and intentional. He often has to actively think about what he is using rather than just becoming a walking pile of passives that automatically nullify every future problem. That might sound like a small distinction, but for this type of show, it matters a lot. In many “skill collection” anime, every new monster eaten feels like another solved category of danger. Here, it feels more like he is building a toolkit, and a toolkit is more interesting than an ever-expanding cheat menu.

That is really where the show worked for me. It keeps the focus narrow. It does not immediately explode into a giant cast. It starts with the main character, then gradually adds another important companion, but it still feels like an adventure rather than a spreadsheet of factions, kingdoms, and side plots. There is a grittier, more grounded feeling to the progression that I appreciated. The power growth has weight because the show gives it just enough friction.

The animation will probably be the biggest filter for people. If you need every fantasy anime to look polished, fluid, and expensive, this probably will not work for you. Personally, I would rather have a lower-budget adaptation of a genuinely interesting story than no adaptation at all. The visual style is simple, but I do not think it ruins the show. It is not beautiful in the traditional sense, but it gets the job done, and the story was strong enough that I stopped caring pretty quickly.

That said, the show is not perfect. The mechanics around his skills could be clearer. Some abilities seem more limited and deliberate, while others feel a little less consistently defined. The production also does not always elevate big moments the way a stronger studio might have. There are scenes where better direction, music, or animation could have made the impact hit much harder. So if someone says this is not objectively a top-tier adaptation, I would understand that.

It actually remembers progression is more fun when the character still has to struggle. It does not instantly turn the main character into a god. It does not abandon the premise after a few episodes. It does not bury the core appeal under a giant supporting cast. It stays focused on the part of the concept I actually wanted to see: a weak adventurer surviving, adapting, and slowly turning the monsters themselves into a path forward.

I appreciated a new take on the genre.

TLDR: If you like monster-eating, skill-taking, progression fantasy shows, Monster Eater is one of the better and more deliberate takes on the trope. The animation is limited, but the premise is handled with enough restraint and focus that I ended up enjoying it far more than expected.

TLDR: I can't really recommend this, unless you want something super short, low animation and super simple to pass the time with, and you simply enjoy the concept of man eating monsters and gaining skills, if like me that's enough for you go ahead and watch it.

If you want average animation, you won't be getting it here, this while an anime is the equivalent of a motion comic more so, the story is very simple. For episodes 1-8, it's a main character that's a low level adventurer, gets betrayed in a dungeon and left for dead, has to eat monsters to survive because he was ... so hungry and injured, starts to gain the monsters abilities, then teams up with a high ranking adventurer due to his newly acquired skills helping her, the two then continue adventuring together.
Additionally each episode is mostly self contained and only about 13 Minutes (Including OP & ED).

The episodes of Monster Eater are mostly setup a situation at the start of the episode, resolve said situation by the end of the episode. An episode could be "defeat a pack of enemies" it's later revealed there is a bigger enemy, and the episode doesn't end with that reveal, but they defeat said enemy, given this in the 10ish minute runtime, this can lead to the show feeling rushed, but additionally it feels mostly lacking in an overarching story, leading the show to feel slow and like there is little progression.

That is until episode 9, where there is the first cliffhanger of the show and the current predicament actually carries over, and this is where the series starts to alleviate the odd slowness and lack of progression the show was having, unfortunately, this show is 12 Episodes in total so, only the last 4 episodes have any sense of an overarching story that spans more than a single episode.

As an anime everything about this show is average or just below, the concepts have been done differently and better in other series, and the animation is simpler and minimal that I can say it's between horrible and bad, if the animation was basic but more than a motion comic, i'd say this show hits a 5, but I can't, so a 4 it is.

Side Tangent Regarding The Pacing Of Episodes 1-8 compared to another show I was also watching at the time, copied from my original preliminary review of the show:

I am currently also watching Transformers Cyberworld, a show with 5 Minute Episodes, that are mostly self contained, with an episode conflict that does get resolved, but allude to and have an overarching conflict with multiple characters and somewhat multiple factions, this makes what I said about the Monster Eater episodes 1-8 all the more noticeable, as the Cyberworld Episodes continually progress the overarching narrative, world & character interactions, while being interesting on their own as individual episodes.

This show tells us about one of the currently popular stories where the MC gets stronger and stronger by eating monsters

Story seems to be quite predictable, episodes seem to be 2 times shorter than your usual ~20min

Main throw off is the fact that this is more manga than anime, literally colored manga with dub on top of scenes

So over time you start to feel like you are reading manga rather than watching anime

And I believe the main reason of a very low score is exactly that

Have it normal mid-tier animation it would have had at least 6.5~7.3 rating but not higher than that due to ... predictable story

But unfortunately we have just colored manga with a dub on top

Would I recommend watching it? Definitely not, as it doesn't feel like an anime unfortunately
