Seishun Buta Yarou wa Randoseru Girl no Yume wo Minai

As Sakuta Azusagawa waits for Mai Sakurajima at the beach on her high school graduation day, he encounters a version of Mai from her child acting days. However, when Mai finally arrives, her younger self disappears, leaving him confused. Sakuta spots an unfamiliar scar on his body when he returns home, which confirms his suspicion—he is involved in another case of the inexplicable Puberty Syndrome.

Not long after, Sakuta and his sister, Kaede, receive a call from their father. He tells them that their mother, who had been recently discharged from the hospital, wants to see her daughter once more. Experiencing strange occurrences while visiting his mother with Kaede, Sakuta must find a way to solve the Puberty Syndrome abnormalities.

Cloverworks doubles down on the Demon Slayer formula again. I feel like that’s a pattern we should not ignore anymore, for better of worse.

Sakuta finds himself again, having to deal with yet another traumatic journey, or rather, self-healing one just after he thinks everything has got back to normal. I mean, so we thought.

After last movie established the reform of Kaede, her having to come to terms with her past trauma and Sakuta feeling like he finally hell together just strong enough to see his sister well and happy, comes this movie, keeping it family centered, but this time revolving around the untold closeted struggle ... of Sakuta himself. Something he has kept buried throughout the show, even to himself and the audience.

If it had ever crossed your mind questioning the the standing between Sakuta and his mother. This movie is about addressing that. It’s weird because before this, you’d think with Kaede finally drawing a genuine smile, everyone in the show has gotten closure and there was nothing left untangled. But after watching this one it really feels like it is. Unless the dad comes in clutch with a something new and troubling, but it’s unlikely. It really makes you think where the story is gonna take us next with the stakes being too low right now. It genuinely feels like a Disney happy ending. But it might just be the eerie quite before the storm.

This and the last movie feel like sibling releases more than anything. They might as well have been a 10 episodes season or one 2 hours long movie. The play well with each other, the share the same themes and familial focus and the continuity is seamless.

Overall: 8/10.

Mixed Feelings

If you're watching this I'm assuming you've seen everything in the series before this movie, as have I. It's hard to judge this movie without the bias of already being a fan of the series, but something about this one just didn't really hit with me. It's still good, and worth watching because it ties up some important points in the storyline, but out of all the movies and episodes so far this one is the least entertaining. It's an exceptionally slow burn even for a slice of life, and the main thrust of the movie doesn't really even start happening until the second half ... or so. All the usual characters show up, but most are just nothing more than ultra short cameos. Sakuta and Mai's romance doesn't really go anywhere new. There is very little character development outside of the main plot of the movie, which I won't spoil, but even that part somehow ends up feeling more insignificant than it should have.

If you're already a big fan of the series, go ahead and watch this as it's only an hour of your time, but as a standalone movie? Not really worth it to be honest. Even if you are a fan of the series you could probably just read a synopsis of what happens in this movie and be perfectly okay moving on to the next season. Frankly I'm puzzled why this movie has one of the higher MAL ratings of all the installments of this show.

This movie shouldn't exist. This is a testament that Seishun Buta Yarou fans will like anything the franchise produces, no matter how bad it is. We really can't go any lower than this. At this point, you may wonder if they are actively trying to make a bad anime to test if the fans will still enjoy it no matter what.

Firstly, there's a serious problem with the plot: nothing happens. Whenever you watch a movie, you expect something to happen, otherwise why waste 1 hour on this. But no, bunny girl can go without it. For the first half, it's just the same characters saying ... the same things, interacting in the same way they have been in previous installments. There are no new characters, no development and not even a memorable scene to justify the movie. You could say it's just like a slice of life which the point is to see the characters interacting and living their lives, without a need for an overarching theme, but the problem is it doesn't work when the characters are insufferable and there's barely any variation in their interactions from previous installments. Firstly, the main couple is absolutely awful. Mai and Sakuta are already bad characters by themselves, but they are even worse as a couple. Every single interaction is embarrassing, the desperate attempt at deadpan humor always falls short, the contrived romance is pathetic. Sakuta proves over and over again that he is a pitiful, deplorable little man, and yet he is portrayed as mature and dependable. It brings back the point of the self inserter who wants to believe a high tier girl like Mai will fall for a ne'er-do-well. Futaba is just spitting flapdoodle about quantum mechanics, saying it may be the cause of the adolescent syndrome at hand (wasn't it always like that? What's new?). Koga's role is to say Sakuta has baito and to call him a baka (have we not seen it before?). Toyohama appears for literally no reason. The only character who barely has a development is Kaede who starts to progress after the prequel events. In the second half of the movie, we finally get to see what it is about. It's about Sakuta's mother. There's just a little issue: why would anyone care about this character that was never important, nor was her relationship with Sakuta and Kaede? It's just a side character without any depth. The result is melodramatic scenes which the viewer can't empathize with, producing a cringeworthy effect. It's just paroxysm without buildup. Finally, there's a major misfortune in the announcement of this feature, Sakurajima Mai is used as bait. The teasers portray Mai and her kid version like it's a crucial point in the story, but she is actually just a side character in this piece.

Art and animation are the same as the prequels, which is subpar and uninspiring. For the sound, the most they could do was a new version of Fukashigi no Carte.

Ketsuron, a film that tries to keep the same quality as other Bunny Girl Senpai titles, which is substandard, but fails at it. This film settles a new low bar, overcoming the second title, Seishun Buta Yarou wa Yumemiru Shoujo no Yume wo Minai, and becoming the ultimate mark of Seishun Buta Yarou fiasco as a franchise.
