I cried at the ending, this anime is kinda beautiful but it's sad that the ending was kinda rushed even though it is still good. 2/20/26

The ending was a bit disappointing. The graduation scene was really impressive, but the final part felt quite forced and didn't affect me at all. Overall, it was a very good anime; the characters were interesting, the art style was fascinating, and some episodes were quite emotional. 8/10

This show is so weird. I honestly can't think of another show off the top of my head that I would describe as "2nd act and nothing else" but somehow this show is exactly that. You'd think there would be a bunch more depth to the initial premise but nope, its just there from the get go: people that have emotional hang ups get stuck in this purgatory and if they start to feel good about life they disappear. And then for the next 11 episodes the characters all do stuff and sometimes some of them feel good about life and disappear and then its the final episode and the rest of them solve all their problems and the show ends. I'm not even saying its bad or anything but it is just the oddest storytelling structure I've seen in a long time. Its a 1 episode act 1, 11 episode act 2, and then a 1 episode act 3.

I'm not sure if being an anime held something back from this but somehow it feels like it would've felt much better as a visual novel or something. There's just something about this series that I can't quite fully articulate that feels off about it as an anime. At the very least it is extremely visual novel and light novel inspired and that creates a very particular slightly negative impression on me. Steins Gate is one of a few series' that managed to break through that barrier for me and this show felt more like a unique but odd Haruhi offshoot.

As usual, I'm kind of rambling with my summary here. Angel Beats created a very specific impression on me I wanted to write down somewhere but that wasn't quite coherent enough for me to put in an actual review to encourage or discourage future watchers. I'm honestly not quite sure if I really liked this or not. All of the component pieces were good and the direction was overall nice but there's just something strange and weightless about it too. Calling it generic wouldn't be right and that's a weak pejorative (especially for something I've written three beefy paragraphs about) but calling it "visual novely" is also sort of vague even if it points more toward my feelings.

I suppose "35th most listed anime on MAL" is a weird zone where you're going to get something with a huge number of ratings/listings (over 2 million!) but at the same time I doubt anyone could accurately guess even half of the shows between 30-39 without looking and a lot of people wouldn't have even watched that many either.

Ok and that's the end. I know this is supposed to be sad but I don't really feel sad and didn't cry. Him crying while yelling screaming for Kanade was quite emotional really though. Well done.

I think this series had too much trying to do like one from the next constantly. Maybe if there were more eps then it could've been explained/done better?

Still I enjoyed it. Everyone did graduate, huh. After Kanade did Otonashi also disappeared? At least in that final scene, it seems they meet again in another life?

Anyways, solid ending. I would've liked a bit more and maybe an explanation on some more stuff but that's ok honestly.

Ok Im pretty sure I understand so im not gonna play back the last few minutes. Basically what im getting is that Otonashi donated his heart and Kanade was the one who got it and basically her regret in life is that she was not able to thank the person who gave her a heart. I think that's right?

anyways the last 30 seconds shows that they meet again which is interesting.. though a few more minutes would have been lovely... to see if they remember each other or their souls really do have a bond.. and to see how things turned out for the other characters too..

Honestly a bit underwhelming but its also beautiful in some ways, I'll put it at 6/10 but honestly might be more of a 5. Ill do 6 since art and VA are so damn good.

This is a rewatch btw I actually watched it 14 years ago just forgot almost everything. Back then and still to this day do not understand why people cry from this anime.

Impecable historia y maravilloso final...

I actually loved this ending, but I wanted more... but whatevs. It was kinda bittersweet, especially seeing everyone finally move on. I’m still not over Kanade and Otonashi tho. The whole graduation thing was so emotional. Overall, Angel Beats was such an experience, even if some parts felt rushed. Definitely gonna remember this one.
