This will be a bit offensive, but... let's be honest, if someone does a review about an anime, but only displays hatred towards it's art style or main character or even just the animation quality, sorry to say, I have to say you're the problem, not the anime! If you're criticizing based on those little things, don't forget, these reviews are for criticizing the anime as a whole package, not for criticizing the animation studio or the author by themselves!

Why did I start like that? well, I know, many would hate this series simply because of unobjective reasons, like, let's be honest, I too hate ... how Himeko acts that makes me want to kill her myself, BUT, the story as a whole package, I must say, is rich in detail, or rather, emotionally complex. From early episodes, it was clear that it's going that way, as in, I already noticed that the "comedy" part is a mislead, since it felt somehow depressing from the start, with lots of suspicious characters showing up, to an end of a season (i do hope there's a 2nd season on this) that makes me start questioning (again) about life and humanity. That might sound like I'm exaggerating things but, as far as the season goes... well, the easiest way to say it is, if you do end up watching it, try to understand the background story and the emotional states of each character there to get what I'm talking about.

Mixed Feelings

Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love! - That's certainly one way to do a rom-com, by having a man deal with a plus-sized, self-claimed beauty that hides a rather dark secret within.

For far too long, we've been graced with rom-coms, or even more romances in general, that feature the handsome young men and their pretty and beautiful young women as their partners, that it feels as if romantic and/or comedy-focused authors just want to helm unique traits that make their series special to begin with, either follow the trend or go off on their own path that they can crash and burn at the seams. So why ... not do something for a change that still emits the fundamentals of the genre combination but in a bizarre way? If you thought of a way to do so, then I've got quite the series for you to check out, by being in the POV of a rather fat girl and still pursuing love like any other ordinary woman through stereotypical means. This is mangaka Mamakari's lone series, Debu to Love to Ayamachi to! a.k.a. Plus-sized Misadventures in Love!, a show where even plus-sized girls can get the attention of everyone, even the guy in question, in a sweet rom-com deal.

A near-death experience for a fat girl that almost feels as if she could've lost her life at any second, only to repeat the stereotypical Isekai reincarnation trope of waking up and realizing that she's in another world, she's so...not there, but back to the same world she lives in, but with a severe case of amnesia to forget who she was back then? Then welcome to the life of Yumeko Koda, who was once branded as the fat girl with an ugly face, only to "turn a new leaf" with her self-boasting that her plus-sized self is deemed worth the attention of not just herself, but also the people around her, and that obese girls can be pretty too.

From a depressed state to a hyper-positive attitude that no trouble can faze, Yumeko exudes (and I mean EXUDES) positivity with her fatso charms that it almost feels bizarre seeing the combination of the two that often, if not, ever rarely goes well. Take, for example, the office environment that she works in for a food company, where colleagues are typical as they come with their selfish, self-serving demands, as are her colleagues Saki Tamai, Yutaka Shigemori, and Masahiko Hosoi, who see her make a radical 180-degree transformation from the slump who's full of unique ideas to this wholesome girl for whom negativity is not a word in her vocabulary. Despite some jealousy drama from the office partner that sits beside her, Saki Tamai can look and be quite the figure due to her annoying positive personality. Somehow, Yumeko is not just being full of herself but also showing the people who thought both positively and negatively around her that she's just like them: someone whose positive-thinking charm is just that infatuating to enjoy. Regardless of who she was in her past life, Yumeko definitely lived the high life with her new comeback.

However, since this is a rom-com of all things, the man of choice...is always the handsome Ikemen, and Keisuke Yuki is definitely one of them. The young vice-president of Yumeko's company, his rather surprising reclusion to the nearby park around the office to hang out on his own due time, and his meeting with Yumeko truly turn heads at how such rom-com mechanics could work like that, and if there's a positive outcome from it, both Keisuke and Yumeko can definitely come to be close friends, but not lovers. That's because deep within the recesses of either of them lies an attempted murder-suicide mystery that connects the two, as well as key figures within and outside their company that engages the rather negative attention of detectives who have come to pursue this case, as it potentially links who Yumeko was then and now. In retrospect, as frenzied as it looks, you can always trust Yumeko to always engage conflicts hands-down and change the face of the tide, even when the cases severely impact her supposedly amnesiac condition to think that she and her centralized "lover"'s relationship could be jeopardized by past events that could potentially haunt her for eons to come, thanks in part to the participation of the police through Detective Motoki Minami and his assistant, Shunzaburou Tanigawa. And yes, I know what you're thinking...Yumeko's positivity CAN truly drive people insane, but that's what got her support group in the first place to "magically" turn hearts towards her, for better or for worse. You make the decision deciphering that.

If you've told me that this was animated by Marvy Jack, the same studio that absolutely wrecked Nanatsu no Taizai, a.k.a. Seven Deadly Sins, with its production on Seasons 3 and 4 (with Studio Deen), one look at this, and it really doesn't show any traces of that infamy at all. This is quite the shocking surprise, as even with most 3rd-rate studios, Marvy Jack CAN actually produce something, even if on a tight budget, of decency! I would've chalked it up to a low-tier budget Studio Deen, but regardless, my perception of Marvy Jack has changed for the better, even if by a tiny bit of sliver and hope.

The music is just as wack as it comes, though it's of the decent kind. The OST really shines, intertwining between the happy-go-lucky and serious moments that the series tends to navigate back and forth, and this is not easy at all when this show has two sides of the Yin and Yang spectrum—happiness against regret. It's a shame that while Gang Parade's OP is kind of decent in spots, this will (potentially) be their last Anisong, as they're due to disband from next year onwards, and I hope nothing but the very best for them. And me being a stan for Yuuma Uchida songs, it comes as no surprise that I would like his ED greatly.

To say that Debu to Love to Ayamachi to! a.k.a. Plus-sized Misadventures in Love! is a series that explores the rom-com genre in an unorthodox manner is truly underselling it. The positivity side can be quite the cumbersome affair, listening to Yumeko just ranting on why the people around her are always negative to influence her newly "positive thinking!" attitude, and the negativity side is quite the writing brilliance that positivity could be accounted for in the darkest of days when all hope seems lost.

But as a whiplash altogether? It seems like a contrivance...that it ultimately depends on you taking the series as it is, either for or against you.

Massive waste of time. The premise is good and the main character is cute but there's close to zero main plot progression.
The only major reveal is whether the main guy is single or not. That's it. The only question regarding the main plot that someone who only watched episode one couldn't asnwer that someone who watched all 12 could.
What lead to the main characters "accident" isn't revealed. There is no confession or any romantic progress past the first few episodes.
This anime frankly shouldn't have been made while the manga is still ongoing. They didn't even have enough material for 12 episodes, the final half ... of the final episode is a flashback montage.
