Tokyo Revengers

Takemichi Hanagaki's second year of middle school was the highest point in his life. He had respect, a gang of friends he could count on, and even a girlfriend. But that was twelve years ago. Today, he's a nobody: a washed-up nonentity made fun of by children and always forced to apologize to his younger boss. A sudden news report on the Tokyo Manji Gang's cruel murder of the only girlfriend he ever had alongside her brother only adds insult to injury. Half a second before a train ends his pitiful life for good, Takemichi flashes back to that same day 12 years ago, when he was still dating Hinata Tachibana.

After being forced to relive the very same day that began his downward spiral, Takemichi meets Hinata's younger brother. Without thinking, he admits to his seeming death before flashing back to the past. Takemichi urges him to protect his sister before inexplicably returning to the future. Miraculously, he is not dead. Stranger still, the future has changed. It seems as though Takemichi can alter the flow of time. Given the chance to prevent his ex-girlfriend's tragic death at the hands of the Tokyo Manji Gang, Takemichi decides to fly through time to change the course of the future.

Absolutely fantastic first 11 episodes. Just some good, hard-coded testosterone ideals about taking ownership of your own fate, loyalty, and the power of friendship, with some time-travel shenanigans thrown in. Pretty damn good.

Starting with episode 12 though, the story loses sight of what made it so compelling and turns into a much more standard shonen: rotating fights, melodramatic character backstories, and main character growth gets stagnant too. Honestly, the first 11 episodes are fantastic, and I'd recommend watching those alone. The story even gives you enough of a sense of closure at that point that you can comfortably leave it there, if you want.

Mixed Feelings

I know how the manga ends and still hope this anime may take a different path, because it has a lot of potential. The story is nice, the time travel of having to shake Hina's little brother's hand to go back into the past was a creative way and the plot really revolves on saving Hina at first, but they kind of lose it when Takemichi just wants to save everyone at one point, which is when the plot gets a bit messy. The opening sequence also captures the audience well, and kept my attention span up for a while. The backstories are nice
The fights ... are average, there's not really anything special, but watching Takemichi just get up over and over again makes me kind of annoyed. Not just in the beginning, but throughout the entire anime, this guy barely knows how to fight and honestly relies on the others to win. His way is just persevering through all of it until the enemy gives up, and I wish they took a Lookism route or something. Overall, Takemichi is just a pathetic character and a crybaby, the rest of the cast carries so hard.

Not Recommended

This might genuinely be the most painful experience of my entire life.

I’ve seen flawed protagonists before, but this guy takes it to another level — every choice he makes feels like a social experiment in how far someone can go without a single critical thought. He only makes terrible decisions, is unbelievably dumb, weak AND aesthetically painful to watch.

I watched the entire series, start to finish, just to be able to say with full authority: IT DOES NOT GET BETTER

Personally, I don’t think the story idea is bad, but the execution is AWFUL. It unfolds in the dumbest, most childish way possible. Looks like the ... show’s terrified someone might accidentally engage a brain cell. It might be the perfect anime for 11/12-year-old boys who think time travel and street gangs are the peak of cool. But honestly, the amount of blood, murders, suicide, and the rape case make me think this wasn’t the intended audience — which means it’s just really badly done.

The supporting cast is mostly forgettable, with Mikey and Draken being the only sparks of actual intrigue. Everyone else feels like background noise that occasionally gets a line.

My personal experience was just constant frustration every 3 minutes because the MC makes choices literally no one in real life would ever make.

I only decided to watch it because I saw a few reels and thought Mikey was cute, so I gave it a shot without high expectations — and somehow, it still managed to be way worse than I thought it would be.

If someone recommends this anime to you, chances are they either secretly dislike you or have such terrible taste that you might want to seriously reconsider the value of that friendship.
