Kanata no Astra

In the year 2063, space travel is feasible and commercially available. As the cheerful Aries Spring arrives at the spaceport to attend a camp on the distant planet McPa, her purse is suddenly snatched by a reckless thief. Luckily, the athletic Kanata Hoshijima is able to retrieve it for her, and Aries soon discovers that he is among the group of teenagers who will be traveling with her on the excursion as team B-5.

Upon arriving at their campsite, the group's trip takes a turn for the worse when a strange sphere of black light sucks them into the vast reaches of outer space. Stranded with seemingly no hope, they find an abandoned ship nearby that provides them with the means to return home. However, they soon discover that they are not as close to their campsite as they initially thought, but are in fact thousands of light-years away from home.

With this realization, the nine members must cautiously manage their resources, maintain their strength, and unite as one to conquer the darkness of space together. While the reason behind their trip's sudden obstruction remains unknown, they nevertheless embark on the treacherous voyage back home aboard their new ship, the Astra.

The plot moves slowly in the first half of the show, but after Episode 6, the plot picks up. The plot twists in the show are amazing and tie into the characters' backstories in a way I would never have predicted. The soundtrack is good. Most of the openings and endings were cut from the show, but the ending song was good. The cast of characters in the show are likable, and the characters have good character development. The mystery was good, but sometimes the suspense is ruined by unnecessary comedy scenes that kill the tension. Also, sometimes the story just forgets about one of ... the mysteries. The ending was a great conclusion to all the characters' stories and was perfect. So overall, Astra Lost in Space is an 8/10 anime. I would definitely recommend this to someone who wants to watch a short sci-fi adventure anime with a good plot twist.

lets start this review by saying that the only thing that drove the plot foward was the character completely getting rid of their survival instincts, the incident that started all of this was a dumbass touching something unknown to them that shouldnt be there in the first place, but it did in fact pay off, the story is great the twist and turns fits nicely with eachother but its hard to appreciate the story when the characters you follow for every second of the story has no self preservation skills, when they were sent on another planet to improve their survival skills in the ... first place
this is all to say that the understanding of human emotions are all over the place their actions are acceptable in a gag anime but not in a very dramatic stuck on another planet type story, even the humorous scenes are made to feel like they're not taking themselfs seriously either

this couldve been way better if characters other the "main three" are seen as more then a convinient plot device to move the story forward

I can say without a doubt this anime was a waste of time. Ignoring how in the very first episode, they treat the viewer like a toddler with how even the most mundane things are pointed out, I'll admit the hook was at the very least interesting. However, I can't say the same about the plot & characters.

This anime, much like others, is a victim of "tell not show." They practically tell you everything. There are countless scenes which exist solely to be exposition, in return, this made the "twists" heavily predictable. It got to a point where the antagonists quite literally sat around ... a roundtable, and directly told the audience their plan. It felt like a ""We are the evil antagonists and here's our evil scheme"" moment.
Literally zero room for exploration nor interpretation.

As for the characters, they're all walking cliches. There's the emo, the smart one, the shy one, the dumb one, etc. Almost every character has a sob story, always more pathetic and flat than the last.

Serious moments are far and few between, and are always met afterwards with some unfunnily unwarranted quip, which doesn't match the tone whatsoever. This makes it feel like said "serious moments" hold very little weight.

I understand this is a comedy anime, comedy is subjective, but the "comedic" scenes more often than not ruin the already non-existent stakes. One moment the characters are hit with a "game over"-esque dilemma, the next they're cracking jokes like their lives weren't just in jeopardy. The anime struggles to take itself seriously, yet expects you to.

Kanata no Astra does a HORRIBLE job attempting to balance the comedy and drama. The characters are one note, and are forgiven immediately each and every time.

In terms of the visuals, the animation is nothing to write home about; the art is quite pleasing to look at, it was the only aspect stopping me from dropping Kanata no Astra altogether.

Overall, calling this mediocre would be an understatement; if you value your time, don't bother.
