Dorohedoro

Hole—a dark, decrepit, and disorderly district where the strong prey on the weak and death is an ordinary occurrence—is all but befitting of the name given to it. A realm separated from law and ethics, it is a testing ground to the magic users who dominate it. As a race occupying the highest rungs of their society, the magic users think of the denizens of Hole as no more than insects. Murdered, mutilated, and made experiments without a second thought, the powerless Hole dwellers litter the halls of Hole's hospital on a daily basis.

Possessing free access to and from the cesspool, and with little challenge to their authority, the magic users appear indomitable to most—aside for a few. Caiman, more reptile than man, is one such individual. He hunts them on a heedless quest for answers with only a trusted pair of bayonets and his immunity to magic. Cursed by his appearance and tormented by nightmares, magic users are his only clue to restoring his life to normal. With his biggest obstacle being his stomach, his female companion Nikaidou, who runs the restaurant Hungry Bug, is his greatest ally.

A Truly Unique Work

Dorohedoro is one of those titles that is hard to compare to anything else. From the very first episodes, it is evident that it doesn't follow the traditional conventions of action or fantasy anime. Its world is incredibly chaotic, violent, and bizarre, yet it manages to be strangely charming at the same time. The setting, character designs, magic system, and even the humor create a distinct identity, giving the work a unique personality.

My experience watching the anime differed somewhat from most people's, as I had already read the entire manga. I followed the physical release from start to finish, so inevitably, I ... found myself comparing the two versions throughout the adaptation.

And this is precisely where the anime loses some of its impact for me. In my opinion, the manga is visually superior. Q Hayashida’s art style is incredibly gritty, heavy with shadows, textures, and details that convey the decay and strangeness of that universe. Every page seems to reinforce the story's heavy, chaotic atmosphere—something I consider one of the work's defining features.

The anime, however, opted for heavy use of CGI, particularly for the characters. While I acknowledge that the studio did a competent job of preserving the visual identity, the 3D animation never quite won me over. Caiman, in particular, felt off to me throughout the series. It isn't bad CGI, especially compared to other productions, but it still has an artificial feel that diminishes some of the visual impact the manga conveys.

Furthermore, I felt that some of that "gritty" aesthetic was toned down in the adaptation. The anime features competent art direction and retains many key elements of the original work, yet it lacks that specific visual weight that made the world of Dorohedoro feel so alive and decaying. I wouldn't call this a major flaw, but I do believe a part of the work's identity was lost in the process. On the other hand, the adaptation does a great job of translating the story into animation. The narrative remains incredibly engaging, packed with mysteries and questions that hold your attention from start to finish. One of Dorohedoro's greatest strengths is its ability to introduce dozens of important characters without any of them feeling disposable. In fact, many of the antagonists are just as charismatic as the protagonists, making it hard to choose a side to root for.

It was also a lot of fun seeing scenes I knew from the manga come to life with animation, a soundtrack, and voice acting. Some of the fight scenes turned out excellently, and the direction manages to convey much of the madness and violence characteristic of the source material. Even with my reservations about the visuals, it remains a competent adaptation that stays very faithful to the original work.

Overall, I still consider Dorohedoro an excellent story and a highly worthwhile experience for anyone looking for something completely unconventional. Its universe, characters, and narrative deliver a blend of action, mystery, dark humor, and bizarreness that few other works can replicate.

My score is slightly lower precisely because I was already familiar with the entire story and because I much prefer the manga's artistic style. Even so, this doesn't detract from the work's quality as an anime; it simply reflects my personal experience.

I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a dark fantasy that breaks the mold and who doesn't mind a rather peculiar visual style.

Uma obra completamente fora da curva

Dorohedoro é uma daquelas obras que você dificilmente consegue comparar com qualquer outra. Desde os primeiros episódios fica evidente que ela não segue os padrões tradicionais dos animes de ação ou fantasia. Seu mundo é extremamente caótico, violento e bizarro, mas ao mesmo tempo consegue ser incrivelmente carismático. A ambientação, o design dos personagens, o sistema de magia e até o humor criam uma identidade muito própria, fazendo com que a obra tenha uma personalidade única.

No meu caso, assistir ao anime foi uma experiência um pouco diferente da maioria das pessoas, já que eu havia lido todo o mangá antes. Inclusive, acompanhei a publicação física do início ao fim, então era inevitável fazer comparações entre as duas versões durante praticamente toda a adaptação.

E é justamente nesse ponto que, para mim, o anime perde bastante força. Na minha opinião, o mangá é muito superior visualmente. A arte de Q Hayashida possui um estilo extremamente sujo, carregado de sombras, texturas e detalhes que ajudam a transmitir toda a sensação de decadência e estranheza daquele universo. Cada página parece reforçar a atmosfera pesada e caótica da história, algo que considero um dos maiores diferenciais da obra.

Já o anime optou por utilizar bastante CGI, principalmente nos personagens. Embora eu reconheça que o estúdio fez um trabalho competente para manter a identidade visual, esse 3D nunca conseguiu me convencer completamente. O Caiman, em especial, foi um personagem que estranhei bastante durante toda a série. Não chega a ser um CGI ruim, principalmente quando comparado a outras produções, mas ainda assim passa uma sensação artificial que tira parte do impacto visual que o mangá consegue transmitir.

Além disso, senti que parte daquela estética "suja" acabou sendo suavizada na adaptação. O anime possui uma direção de arte competente e mantém muitos elementos importantes da obra original, mas falta justamente aquele peso visual que fazia o mundo de Dorohedoro parecer tão vivo e decadente. Não considero isso um defeito grave, mas acredito que uma parte da identidade da obra acabou ficando pelo caminho.

Por outro lado, a adaptação faz um ótimo trabalho ao transportar a história para a animação. A narrativa continua extremamente envolvente, cheia de mistérios e perguntas que prendem a atenção do começo ao fim. Um dos maiores méritos de Dorohedoro é conseguir apresentar dezenas de personagens importantes sem que nenhum pareça descartável. Inclusive, muitos dos antagonistas acabam sendo tão carismáticos quanto os próprios protagonistas, tornando difícil escolher um lado para torcer.

Também foi muito divertido ver cenas que eu conhecia do mangá ganhando movimento, trilha sonora e dublagem. Algumas lutas ficaram excelentes em animação, e a direção consegue transmitir boa parte da loucura e da violência características da obra. Mesmo com minhas ressalvas ao visual, ainda é uma adaptação competente e bastante fiel ao material original.

No geral, continuo considerando Dorohedoro uma excelente história e uma experiência que vale muito a pena para quem procura algo completamente diferente do convencional. Seu universo, seus personagens e sua narrativa conseguem entregar uma mistura de ação, mistério, humor ácido e bizarrice que poucas obras conseguem reproduzir.

A minha nota acaba sendo um pouco menor justamente porque já conhecia toda a história e porque gosto muito mais da identidade artística do mangá. Ainda assim, isso não diminui a qualidade da obra como anime, apenas influencia a minha experiência pessoal.

Recomendo principalmente para quem procura uma fantasia sombria completamente diferente do padrão e não se incomoda com um estilo visual bastante peculiar.

Mixed Feelings

​Dorohedoro is a chaotic, "punk rock" acid trip of an anime that defies standard categorization. It is a show that is "definitely not average," existing in a space of "gritty mud and sludge" where the line between hero and villain is as blurry as the amnesiac fog surrounding its protagonist. At a 7.25/10, it is a series that might make you "hate" the initial experience, only to reveal its "promise" as the world-building takes hold.

● Short Synopsis
​In a grim, polluted megacity known as "The Hole," magic users from another dimension treat humans as practice targets for their spells. Caiman, a man with a lizard’s head ... and no memory of his past, is immune to magic and possesses a second person living inside his throat. Along with his best friend Nikaido—a gyoza-chef with her own deadly secrets—Caiman hunts magic users, biting their heads to let the man inside "check" if they are the one who cursed him. Their quest for identity puts them directly in the crosshairs of the En Family, a powerful crime syndicate of sorcerers who are just as strange and "oddball" as the duo themselves.

● Themes and Narrative Structure
​The narrative is a "mystery box" wrapped in a layer of "dark and scary" comedy. It explores themes of identity, the cycle of violence, and the unexpected "humanity" found in even the most brutal characters. The story doesn't follow a traditional hero’s path; instead, it bounces between the lives of the "protagonists" and the "antagonists" until you realize that both sides are just trying to survive in a "horrible, disgusting" world.

While you might find the first half of the season "flat out garbage" due to its jarring introduction, the series has a way of growing on you. It is "real odd" and "inconsequential" at first glance, but the "well-organized" mystery ensures that every strange detail eventually connects. It’s a show that requires you to lean into the "weirdness" to find the "profound meaning" beneath the surface.

● ​Character Development
​The characters are "real oddballs" who can feel "bland" if you’re looking for typical shonen growth. They don't have "big emotional" declarations; they just exist.

Caiman: A "simple guy" who just wants to eat gyoza and find his face. His "goofy lightheartedness" contrasts with his capacity for extreme violence.
​
Nikaido: More than just a sidekick, her "human understanding" of the world and her hidden past make her the series' grounding force.

​The En Family: Characters like Shin and Noi (the "cleaners") have "good chemistry" that often outshines the leads. They treat their "brutal jobs" with a nonchalant, "workplace" attitude that is both "annoying" and fascinatingly unique.

● Technical Execution
​Produced by MAPPA, the series uses a "Unique Art Style" that is heavily reliant on 3DCG, which is its most polarizing feature.

Visuals & CGI: The "CGI doesn't make you want to love them" at first, and some scenes can look "rough" or like "garbage" in the first half of the cour. However, the show uses CGI to its advantage during the complex action sequences and to render Caiman’s detailed lizard head. The hand-drawn backgrounds are "gorgeous works of art," creating a high-contrast look that matches the "gritty" tone of the manga.

Soundtrack: The sound is "very original" and arguably one of the "great things" about the show. Composed by (K)NoW_NAME, the soundtrack features an industrial, electronic, and punk-rock vibe that "thematically fits perfectly." It’s an "unusual" score that enhances the "dark aura" and "chaotic energy" of the Hole.

In time or perahps out of stubborn insistence on FINISHING this anime, Dorohedoro comes out of left field with a shocking adaptation of the Manga. Dorohedoro combines the love of cooking, body mutations and off-beat, weird world building of sorcerers of varying degrees in power.

however, everyone in the series seems to have a 'cap' on their abilities throughout the story and a giant reptilian with a man in his body is seeking out his identity in this weird world. If any of Dorohedoro seems appealing, including the violence, character design and fights --- read the manga -- go on, do it.

for those of ... you who are looking for an opinion on the title, I'll go ahead and break it down in the following

Story

those of us familiar with the pacing of the manga might feel rushed through the entirety of the animation, while the violence is not at all crucial to the plot, opening on a battle highlighting the so called, 'stakes' of the series is off and running with a giant lizard chomping some ones head and being verified by a man in the giants throat. that's all of the motivation, as Caiman is as large and indeed powerful and physically imposing, there is little weight behind his motivation or sensibility. Caiman is unaffected by magic. Why? Caiman wields blades that can slice a being into multiple pieces obliterating the attacker. Why? There is a severed hand that opens a door allowing one of the assailaints escape and throw the bodies/remains into essentially cryto tubes that will resurrect them or some thing -- again, why?

If you were looking for any real answers, then you will not get them, at least on the surface, with 12 episodes, the plot is quickly glossing over established ideas from the manga then serving the plate stone cold without any sort of seasoning. We're expected to take the superficial actions at face value for the over-the-top anime tourist first 'bizarre' and 'brutal' anime that tops every first time commentators youtube channel.

Outside of finding the mystery sorcerer responsible for his new head, other human beings appear to be in far worse circumstances, some of whom, are permanently disfigured for the sake of those in power deciding to experiment on human beings for the sake of curiosity. In any motivation, following the characters throughout their highlights proved to be pretty frustrating and enduring the dialogue felt numbing at best. While the plot goes along, everyone tends to come in and out of the plot too quickly, offering meaningless plot armor to most of the cast seemingly undone with a potion or a spell or a trinket that's discarded as a one time get out of jail free card until the next episode.

Art

Oh dear lord..

In this era of everyone calling 'everything' slop to some extent, Dorohedoro feels, moves and looks like slop. While produced by MAPPA, Dorohedoro stands as possibly not having the same love in production that Chainsaw Man has in this modern era. Keeping in mind that the production of Yuri!!! on Ice preceded this show, the expectations are often set higher with every adaptation. In the artwork, the manga was pretty stripped down in terms of 'style' but the monochrome fit the design of the unique characters, masks and power creep throughout the show. While the idea that, every show, animation and so forth can develop its own, 'style' staples like cowboy bebop, trigun, even naruto established a known 'style' that flowed throughout the show that added depth to their own genre of animation. The entire animation and art behind Dorohedoro, feels, lifeless. Characters walk around like men on stilts with jerky, robotic movements that are too calculated and impossible. While their inspired movements hint to the spirit of the manga, the translation is lost on, admittedly, empty or even shallow iterations that follow a certain cynicism to the cast of characters.

Not a single design stood out beyond, a poorly rendered idea behind the hand drawn manga. For instance, in a scene around dinner, Fujita is introducing himself too two enforcers for En. He introduces himself in a hand shake thats meant to be comedic, but, the strict up down movement without bending felt, forced, harsh and lacking any fluid motion. Even when Noi is pointing to the breastless ghoul in the background, she motions like a static stop motion puppet spurned to life by a jolt of energy. While the original seemed to inspire said motions, while revisiting other older shows such as Read or Die the TV and ergo proxy for comparisons between the decades since. Anime in the past, at least in most titles, has a bit more dimension to some of the characters and animated still shots often reflect the depths of their faces, the movement of eyes and hands are deliberate to tell their own stories. Here, the art is always fixed on producing replica's out of the manga only to rush to the next still or establishing shot, hurridly puppet the characters out robotically and move on.

Art and animation are not well established, memorable or even above sword of berserk levels of care. A terrible adaptation from the original material.

Sound

For a long time, there isn't anything memorable in anime about the sound or music anymore. It all blends together outside of the voice actors portraying the characters with as much life as possible. In this series, it all seems generic slash, bleed, bash and bam noise. It became background fodder after awhile as nothing stood out as unique or potent enough to grab your attention or build suspension.

Character

Characters die, experience some level of traumatic event, but the world around them is unforgiving and brutal that none of the suffering feels translated for anyone to feel anything. Are there moments where characters reflect on their world or how it makes them feel? Does the world building and idea behind their existence go anywhere? Is there a point in the revenge plot that stands out, some magical mcmuffin or establishing shot or huge reveal that flips the story on its head. no, not really. As generic as it begins to sound, the designs of the individuals took most of the enjoyment out of their development, but, everyone seems to stay largely the same. Of course, fans of the series will argue that it's all a large build up to some edging climax followed up in season 2, but, we don't have a second season yet, so it all seems like all gas and no breaks until the end. Everyone either dies, gets deformed or mutilated, but, there is no real investment in the stock photo anime people the series is telling me actually suffer. If it were out of the ordinary that the sorcerers held any weight behind their actions, then it would be possible for the motivations of Caiman to turn normal would have more weight. But, given the time and effort put into the whole class of actions -- trying to focus on development seemed as pointless as ever, with every individual having their own, surface level motivations without any meaningful changes in their thought process. Were not asking for One Piece lengths of character development to where fans are crying over a hat -- but perhaps time for the characters to breathe and have talks with one another wouldn't hurt.

Enjoyment / Overall

while the last few paragraphs feel like I am taking a nose dive into the cynicism deep in, clowning on the show for the sake of kicking a series while it's down - it's quite the opposite. Dorohedoro is a great idea, while I hate the word, quirky comes to mind. It isn't absurd levels of abenoboshi arcade or the weird avante garde series I've watched. It has/had an identity, some solid core to the world building that, with enough time could have developed the characters into deeper layers of existence. Yes, the environment is bleak, sub-human or other worldly beings treating humans like cattle -- there has been better execution in other series that took the, 'humans are the lowest' and sprung up a series into a large phenomenon. While shows like Gantz, FLCL, Golden Kamuy and dungeon Meshi have varying levels of splicing together humor and violence -- even strange settings and gore -- Dorohedoro feels as if in a bubble sing its praise, their voices echo off the walls into a chorus of many, it's still the small few who are seeing their beloved animated, which, in a way, validates their enjoyment of the series.

Will folks enjoy it? Love it? It's a title ridiculous enough to garner attention, I'd be surprised some one might be as inspired enough to get a shirt, but, there are no stand out moments in the series that push it beyond the plateau of generic weird anime, the series.

No actual stakes, no willingness to go to the boundary and leap over it. It plays with the ideas in a toybox filled with possibilities, then gives in to the safest, netflix friendly options possible. It isn't a show for everyone. If you read the manga and find enjoyment from the panels, the characters and the world, you'll come to the anime feeling distant. It's not really a show for anyone but the super fans happy that its existence is existing and possibly making the rounds to others so they can speculate and RP in the world the anime refuses to add any depth too.
