Covered in ice and snow, Elior Forest is the home to dangerous magical beasts and 50 elves frozen in ice. One day, the great spirit Puck helps a young girl break out of her ice prison. Her name is Emilia, a half-elf born with silver hair, long ears, and amethyst eyes—features that resemble the evil Witch who destroyed half the world long ago.

Shunned by society because of her appearance, Emilia dwells in the forest with Puck as her sole companion and family. Burdened with a sin of destruction she does not remember committing, she spends her days trying to find a way to help her frozen kin. But when the great spirit Melakuera, the Arbitrator of the world, finds Emilia, her right to stay alive is brought into question. Will the bonds of ice she formed with Puck prove to be the warm thread that defies fate?

It’s basically Emilia’s movie.

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World: The Frozen Bond is a special designed primarily to develop one of the series' most important characters: Emilia. While the main anime focuses heavily on Subaru’s journey, this film reveals who Emilia was before the events of the main story and how she became the person we know today.

In my opinion, the special succeeds admirably in this regard. Throughout the film, we follow a portion of her life prior to meeting Subaru, gaining a better understanding of her personality, her traumas, and the hardships she faced living in near-total isolation while being constantly judged for ... her appearance. This makes it much easier to empathize with the character, as we finally get to see her side of the story.

Furthermore, the film answers several questions fans have had since the first season. We learn more about Emilia’s family, gain insight into her life before arriving at Roswaal’s estate, and get to know key figures from the past a little better. One of the most interesting aspects is seeing what Petelgeuse was like before he completely lost his mind. Even if not every answer is profound, it is fascinating to observe how specific events shaped the characters we know from the main series.

Another highlight for me was the story's atmosphere. Unlike the main anime, there is no Subaru here to turn back time whenever something goes wrong. This imbues every conflict with a much greater sense of danger, as we know the consequences are final. This feeling of helplessness significantly contributes to the film's melancholic tone and illustrates just how much darker that period was for the characters.

The special also reinforces Puck’s importance in Emilia’s life. Their relationship takes center stage, showing how they came to trust one another and forging a bond that better explains their behavior in the main series. It is a simple development, yet it adds a great deal to their relationship.

Visually, the film maintains the high quality expected of Re:Zero. The animation is consistent, and the snow-covered landscapes are beautiful, effectively conveying the environment's sense of isolation. The action sequences are well-directed and deliver impactful moments, while the soundtrack continues to foster the emotional atmosphere characteristic of the franchise.

However, the film is not without its flaws. At times, the pacing drags, and some scenes run longer than necessary. Furthermore, much of the story serves more as a supplement for existing fans than as a truly standalone film; viewers unfamiliar with Re:Zero likely won't get the same enjoyment out of the experience.

Overall, Hyouketsu no Kizuna is a great addition to the franchise. It does an excellent job developing Emilia, answering key questions about her past, and expanding the series' universe, all while introducing new mysteries that pique further interest in the rest of the story. While not essential for understanding the main plot, it certainly enriches the experience for Re:Zero fans who want to get to know one of the protagonists better.

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu - Hyouketsu no Kizuna é um especial que tem como principal objetivo desenvolver uma das personagens mais importantes da série: Emilia. Enquanto o anime principal foca muito na jornada do Subaru, este filme serve para mostrar quem era Emilia antes dos acontecimentos da história principal e como ela se tornou a pessoa que conhecemos.

Na minha opinião, esse especial cumpre muito bem esse papel. Durante o filme, acompanhamos parte de sua vida antes de conhecer Subaru, entendendo melhor sua personalidade, seus traumas e as dificuldades que enfrentou vivendo praticamente isolada e sendo constantemente julgada por sua aparência. Isso faz com que seja muito mais fácil criar empatia pela personagem, já que finalmente conseguimos enxergar seu lado da história.

Além disso, o filme responde diversas perguntas que muitos fãs tinham desde a primeira temporada. Descobrimos mais sobre a família da Emilia, entendemos melhor como era sua vida antes de chegar ao domínio de Roswaal e também conhecemos um pouco mais sobre personagens importantes do passado. Um dos aspectos mais interessantes é justamente ver como era Petelgeuse antes de enlouquecer completamente. Mesmo que nem todas as respostas sejam profundas, é muito interessante observar como certos acontecimentos moldaram os personagens que conhecemos na série principal.

Outro ponto que achei muito legal é o clima da história. Diferente do anime principal, aqui não existe Subaru para voltar no tempo sempre que algo dá errado. Isso faz com que cada conflito transmita uma sensação de perigo muito maior, pois sabemos que as consequências são definitivas. Esse sentimento de impotência ajuda bastante a construir a atmosfera melancólica do filme e mostra como aquele período era muito mais sombrio para os personagens.

O especial também reforça a importância de Puck na vida da Emilia. A relação entre os dois recebe bastante destaque e mostra como eles passaram a confiar um no outro, criando um vínculo que explica muito melhor o comportamento de ambos durante a série principal. É um desenvolvimento simples, mas que acrescenta bastante ao relacionamento entre eles.

Visualmente, o filme mantém a ótima qualidade que já era esperada de Re:Zero. A animação é consistente, os cenários cobertos de neve são muito bonitos e ajudam a transmitir a sensação de isolamento daquele ambiente. As cenas de ação também são bem dirigidas e conseguem entregar momentos bastante impactantes, enquanto a trilha sonora continua contribuindo para criar o clima emocional característico da franquia.

Apesar disso, o filme não deixa de apresentar alguns problemas. Em certos momentos, o ritmo é um pouco lento e algumas cenas acabam se prolongando mais do que o necessário. Além disso, boa parte da história funciona mais como complemento para quem já acompanha a obra do que como um filme realmente independente. Quem assistir sem conhecer Re:Zero provavelmente não aproveitará a experiência da mesma forma.

No geral, Hyouketsu no Kizuna é um ótimo complemento para a franquia. Ele desenvolve muito bem a Emilia, responde perguntas importantes sobre seu passado, expande o universo da obra e ainda apresenta novos mistérios que despertam ainda mais curiosidade para acompanhar o restante da história. Não é um filme indispensável para entender a trama principal, mas certamente enriquece bastante a experiência de quem gosta de Re:Zero e queria conhecer melhor uma de suas protagonistas.

Mixed Feelings

A good background for Emilia that really adds to her character I think on it's own it is stretched out and boring but I feel it adds a lot to re:zero as a whole so it cannot be fully discredited in that regard. I feel that it drags it feet especially in the middle as it tries to stretch what should've been a 10-20 minute OVA way longer so you're just stuck waiting for it to get back to Emilia's story but it does give her and Puck backstory that they desperately needed which makes certain parts of Season 2 hit harder and gives context ... to parts of Season 1 so it definitely shouldn't be skipped by someone watching re:zero.

Unfortunetly it's a boring filler.

If after watching seaason 1 you feel like Puck and Emilia deserve much more screen time - watch this movie.
Otherwise you propably should skip this and go straight into season 2.

This movie is supposed to be centerd around Emilia and Puck: their backstories and beggining of their relationship. In the end for each new information you get, 2 more questions appear and in the end you still don't know essential lore about their lives.

A lot of this movie is just action without stakes so that's another issue. Also every character presented in this movie (except for Puck and Emilia) is ... a one-dimensional cliche NPC.
