JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 3: Stardust Crusaders

Years after an ancient evil was salvaged from the depths of the sea, Joutarou Kuujou sits peacefully within a Japanese jail cell. He's committed no crime yet demands he not be released, believing he's been possessed by an evil spirit capable of harming those around him. Concerned for her son, Holy Kuujou asks her father, Joseph Joestar, to convince Joutarou to leave the prison. Joseph informs his grandson that the "evil spirit" is in fact something called a "Stand," the physical manifestation of one's fighting spirit which can adopt a variety of deadly forms. After a fiery brawl with Joseph's friend Muhammad Avdol, Joutarou is forced out of his cell and begins learning how to control the power of his Stand.

However, when a Stand awakens within Holy and threatens to consume her in 50 days, Joutarou, his grandfather, and their allies must seek out and destroy the immortal vampire responsible for her condition. They must travel halfway across the world to Cairo, Egypt and along the way, do battle with ferocious Stand users set on thwarting them. If Joutarou and his allies fail in their mission, humanity is destined for a grim fate.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders (Saison 1) marque un tournant majeur dans la franchise avec l'introduction des Stands, révolutionnant complètement la manière d'aborder les combats.

Au premier visionnage, ce long périple de 50 jours à travers le monde peut paraître un peu répétitif ou traîner en longueur avec sa structure « un ennemi par épisode ». Pourtant, avec le recul, c'est précisément ce voyage qui permet de construire et de souder le groupe de manière organique. On s'attache profondément à cette bande : la force tranquille de Jotaro, le retour d'un Joseph plus expérimenté mais toujours aussi expressif, et surtout la loyauté sans faille de Kakyoin, ... Avdol et Polnareff.

L'alchimie entre ces personnages et la naissance de cette pure fraternité masculine font tout le charme de cette première moitié. Même si l'intensité dramatique explose véritablement dans l'arc suivant en Égypte, cette mise en place pose des bases solides, pleines d'humour, d'ingéniosité et de bravoure. Un road-trip dépaysant et indispensable pour apprécier pleinement le dénouement de la quête contre Dio.

Mixed Feelings

Probably a very unpopular opinion, but I think this part is decent, nothing on the level of other Jojo parts. If I had to describe this part briefly, it’s experimental and action packed.

The Jojo we follow here is Jotaro Kujo, and his whole personality is just serious aura farmer. I don’t dislike this Jojo but he’s very one note. Regarding characters, I actually think the side characters, his group is written better and more dynamic than him. Avdol and Polnareff come to mind. The characters here are 50/50, half I like, the other half I don’t care for too much.

The story to me is the ... weakest here, they are traveling to Egypt to take down Dio who comes back to save Jotaros mom. This is fine and all, but the execution was poor. Every episode feels like a villain of the week. The fights are cool, but you get to a point where you want to see the actual story progress and it just doesn’t happen.

The animation and fights are still solid throughout and are honestly the thing that kind of save this season for me. Besides that I honestly think it’s pretty mediocre, but boosted by the entertaining fights and the occasional heavy moments.

I would still obviously recommend watching if you’re getting into Jojo but I personally think this is one of the weakest parts.

Overall Score: 62% on the moist meter 🤔

A series that oozes a sense of arrogance, so assured of its own style and characters. The main character is one of the most boring, cliché blockheads in the genre. That says a lot considering just how much competition there is in anime in that category. He is also a high school student, because of course he is, we haven't seen that in a character 27 million times before. The character looks like he is in his thirties at least, but no, he is just a badass high school kid. The rest of the cast are mostly one note as well.

I do like some ... of the battles for sure, even if the show feels like one long excuse for these fights to take place. All of this wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but what ruins the entire show is just how immature it is. A show with some brutal sequences of violence is also home to fart and feces jokes. Anime in general is sadly victim to terrible humor and reliance on "wackiness" to make up for a terrible story. Stardust Crusaders is no different.

I did like the build up to Dio. They did a good job at keeping him mysterious, and threatening as hell. The end result doesn't live up to that, maybe there was no way it could. Dio's abilities and build-up should've made him basically unstoppable. Despite this, the ending is fine for what it is. Just a shame there's so much by the numbers fluff and cringe inducing garbage leading up to it.
