Kill la Kill

After the murder of her father, Ryuuko Matoi has been wandering the land in search of his killer. Following her only lead—the missing half of his invention, the Scissor Blade—she arrives at the prestigious Honnouji Academy, a high school unlike any other. The academy is ruled by the imposing and cold-hearted student council president Satsuki Kiryuuin alongside her powerful underlings, the Elite Four. In the school's brutally competitive hierarchy, Satsuki bestows upon those at the top special clothes called "Goku Uniforms," which grant the wearer unique superhuman abilities.

Thoroughly beaten in a fight against one of the students in uniform, Ryuuko retreats to her razed home where she stumbles across Senketsu, a rare and sentient "Kamui," or God Clothes. After coming into contact with Ryuuko's blood, Senketsu awakens, latching onto her and providing her with immense power. Now, armed with Senketsu and the Scissor Blade, Ryuuko makes a stand against the Elite Four, hoping to reach Satsuki and uncover the culprit behind her father's murder once and for all.

Kill la Kill is an anime series created and produced by Trigger. The series follows Ryuko Matoi on her search for her father's killer, which brings her into conflict with Satsuki Kiryuin, the iron-willed student council president of Honnouji Academy, and Ryuko, Satsuki, and others obtain martial arts superpowers from their clothes made by Life Fibers, which appear to have a will of their own. Giving a full, honest, and non-biased review of Kill la Kill is hard for me because it has had such an impact on my life and who I am as a person. I wouldn't be the man I am today ... without this show and rewatching it has done me a lot of good and was really fun. But yall probably don't wanna hear about any of that, so that being said, here's my thoughts on the series spoiler-free, as someone who has watched it many times.

Pros:
-The animation of Kill la Kill is immaculate. Trigger is commonly known as for their incredible animation and this is where it comes from. Every fight and shot is top-notch and has so much heart and soul put into it. The visuals all look incredible the characters move so fluid, it's so amazing. Animation wise, it's easily my favorite anime ever.
-The plot is also extremely well written. The amount of plot twists and unexpected turns and well written moments make it an incredible story and one that will 100% have you on the edge of your seats.
-The amount of life lessons Kill la Kill teaches can also not be understated. Stuff like sacrificing comfort, freedom, self-acceptance, trust, and how people aren't pawns in someone else's game, and of course, no matter how hard you struggle in life, to never lose your way. It uses its unique style choices as hidden allegories to form an extremely good anti-submissive message.
-Of course, the characters are extremely well written too. Ryuko is still my favorite female character of all time and her journey of self acceptance and love is still one of the most beautiful character arcs of all time. Satsuki is just as great making for an amazing villain who develops into an unlikely ally. Senketsu is still one of the greatest best friends in all of anime, Mako and her family are incredibly funny, all the Elite Four are also well written and have great character arcs of their own, Mikitsugi is... Mikitsugi , and while not likable at all, the mains villains, Ragyo and Nui, and incredibly well written antagonists.
Plot
-The power system and world building of Kill la Kill is also suprisingly underrated. The whole concept of Life Fibers and Goku Uniforms makes for a very cool power system, and stuff like the Academy, Revocs and the many other factions of the show make for a great underrated war story that's under-looked, and just basic details add more charm and fun to the world of this series.
-The soundtrack is an absolute bop. Every song gives off high and insane energy. Some of my favorites are Before My Body Is Dry, Kiryu G@ Ki LI, Blumenkrantz, Sankiba, and literally every opening and ending song the show has.
-The fights are amazing. Almost every fight is so well done and cool. The unique powers every character has makes for some cool and downright insane fight potential and choreography and the show doesn't have a single bad or disappointing fight IMO.

Cons:
-I have two problems with Kill la Kill on a rewatch. First off, pacing for the series is all over the place. For example, it goes from stuff like Ryuko fighting all the low class students to her fighting Satsuki as early as episode 3. Not saying that that's a bad thing but I feel like I would've liked one or two more episodes, especially towards the end.
-Now if someone were to dislike Kill la Kill for this next flaw, honestly, I can't blame them. It can be funny at times but it is annoying for the most part. Say it with me everyone. THE! FAN! SERVICE! Like I get it's the whole plot of the show, and it's cool that it has a actual reason for being there, and I do like how it's supposed to be an allegory for liberation and breaking out of control, but still, it's still annoying and unnecessary at times. Like any scene with Mikitsugi, it's just not necessary. Not saying I don't love him but my boy doesn't need to take off his shirt every episode. Also the transformations. I aint saying they don't look cool as hell, but... like come on.

But that all being said, while Kill la Kill is far from flawless, I couldn't ever give it anything less than a 10. It helped me through tough times in my life and taught me about what accepting yourself truly is. I definitely recommend you give it a shot. It may not be your favorite show, but I definitely doubt you won't leave the final episode without a smile on your face.

Mixed Feelings

I mean... it's clearly a metaphor for how women are viewed in society: the more of their body they show, the more they get acknowledged. Otherwise, it could be the usual shounen trope written by a very horny bastard who sexualises minors... who can tell?

The art style and animation are giving me Mob Psycho vibes. The typical plot of the chain of villains to defeat, in order to battle the final one, started at the end of episode 3. Let's see how the series will drag on for another 21 episodes.

Edit: what happened to the animation in episode 4? 😭.

Aside from that, now that I've ... finished the series, I believe the high praise it received is largely due to the era in which it aired. Today, I don't think it would gain the same acclaim. The plot is dragged out, and I felt that the later episodes shifted to a more serious and layered tone compared to the first half. The plot twists are fine, and overall it's not completely garbage—I'm slightly disappointed, but I couldn't miss out on the classics.

At first, I was hoping that a female main character would help the series diverge from the male-oriented medium, but in the end, I wouldn't recommend this anime to women (for obvious reasons...)

What a waster, what a fucking waster ©
Idk how people find this anime entertaining. Does it comment on something like a good satire? Nope. Is it funny in dialogue or visual comedy like a good parody? Nope. Does the over-the-top action provide enough entertainment? Nah, it's repetitive. I don't want to call a stupid show stupid and write a whole essay ranting about it. Being a stupid, cheesy, wild-ride cringe show is fine. It can be delicious. But it's not a KLK case. It's just a boring waste.
Let me, a professional cringe enthusiast, tell you how to make a good cringe. It's simple - once ... you set a "trash bar," you can't lower it at any cost. Like in the Riki-Oh, where the level of insanity never drops. A grotesque gore killing evolves into an even more pathos-laden silly mass murder scene and action, the viewer never gets a chance to catch their breath. What about KLK? When a silly villain is beaten, all the tasty bits of young female flesh are shown and all the arguments are shouted, nothing happens. It just goes on and on in the same groove. Same jokes, same nudity, same action. And of course, the same expositional drama, as if anyone would care about a cheap clichéd revenge arc in the trash that was made for fun. So for me watching KLK was like chewing cheap gum - repetitive motion with the taste that wears off pretty fast.
